Orange, brown, or black stains? Your water is telling you something.If your sinks, tubs, and laundry keep staining no matter how hard you scrub, the culprit is almost always iron or manganese, two minerals that Nova Scotia well water picks up straight from the ground it travels through.
Both have a lasting, salt-free fix. It starts with a water test that measures exactly how much of each you’re dealing with.
The signs iron or manganese leave behind
You rarely need a lab to suspect these two. They announce themselves on almost every surface your water touches.
- Orange or brown staining. Iron’s signature, showing up in sinks, tubs, toilets, and around drains.
- Black or dark brown marks. The classic sign of manganese, usually darkest where water pools or evaporates.
- Stained laundry. Rust-coloured or grey marks that come back on whites and towels wash after wash.
- A metallic taste. Either mineral can leave your drinking water tasting like it came from a tin cup.
- Water that discolours as it sits. Clear from the tap, then rusty or murky after standing in a glass or kettle.
- Falling water pressure. Over time, iron deposits can clog lines, aerators, and fixtures.
Why it happens
Iron and manganese are abundant in the ground and bedrock beneath much of Nova Scotia. As rain and groundwater move through that rock, they dissolve traces of each mineral and carry them into the aquifers that feed private wells. It has nothing to do with how your well was drilled. It’s simply the geology underneath it.
Here’s the frustrating part: in dissolved form, both minerals are invisible. Your water can look perfectly clear at the tap. The moment it meets air (in a sink, a toilet tank, a load of laundry), the minerals oxidize into solid particles, and that’s when the staining begins.

Iron vs manganese
The two minerals usually travel together, and one water test measures both. Here’s how to tell which one is leaving its mark.

Iron
The look. Orange to reddish-brown staining in showers, sinks, and toilets, plus rust marks on clothes and linens.
The habits. Iron is one of the most common issues we treat, and one of the most stubborn. Left alone, it can slowly clog water lines and drag down your pressure.
The fix. A salt-free air-oxidation filter clears it at the source; in some homes a softener can handle smaller amounts.

Manganese
The look. Brown to black staining, often darkest around drains, inside dishwashers, and wherever water evaporates.
The habits. Usually found alongside iron and shares its metallic taste, but leaves darker, harder-looking marks that many homeowners mistake for mould.
The fix. The same salt-free air-oxidation filter handles manganese too: one tank, both minerals.
How we fix it
Our go-to solution is the air-oxidation filter. Instead of adding anything to your water, it uses ordinary air to do on purpose what your sink has been doing by accident: the dissolved minerals oxidize inside the tank, turn solid, and get filtered out and flushed away before the water ever reaches your taps. One system clears iron, manganese, and sulphur with no salt or chemicals.
Sizing matters. A filter that’s too small can’t keep up with your water; one that’s too big is money you didn’t need to spend. So we start with a water test that measures your actual iron and manganese levels, along with pH, total dissolved solids, and tannins, and size the system to those numbers rather than a guess. Why is my water clear at the tap but stains everything it touches?
Because the iron and manganese are dissolved, they’re invisible until the water meets air. Once exposed, the minerals oxidize into solid particles that settle on sinks, tubs, and laundry as stains. Treating the water before it reaches your taps stops the cycle.
Will a water softener remove iron and manganese?
A softener can pick up trace amounts, but once iron or manganese climbs past that, a dedicated air-oxidation filter is the right tool. Plenty of Nova Scotia homes run both. Your test results tell us which setup makes sense.
Does the filter use salt or chemicals?
