One of the two forms bacteria takes in well water. E. coli typically shows up when surface water finds a path into the well, carrying contamination with it. Nothing about your water’s look or taste will tip you off; only a lab result will.

Coliform
The broader bacterial group and the more common finding on a well report. A coliform result is your well’s way of telling you that surface water, and whatever travels with it, has a way in. That’s worth knowing and worth confirming.

Bacteria has no taste, no smell, and no colour. Water from an affected well pours just as clear and tastes just as clean as water that’s perfectly fine, which is why routine testing, not waiting for a symptom, is the habit that protects a family on a well.
When to test
NS Environment recommends testing wells for bacteria about twice a year. A simple rhythm works well: sample once in spring, once in fall, and you’ll catch changes long before you’d ever notice them at the tap. It’s also worth checking your water chemistry every couple of years.

- Retest after events. Heavy rain, flooding, or work on the well or pump are natural moments to sample again.
