Water Treatment in Sydney & Cape Breton

The island’s authorized EcoWater dealer, since 2000.

From Sydney and Glace Bay to Baddeck and Port Hawkesbury, we test, install, and service water treatment systems across Cape Breton. Iron staining, sulphur smell, hard water, arsenic, uranium: whatever your water is doing, chances are we’ve treated it before.

It starts with a water test. Perform your test with us, buy a system, and we credit your standard testing fee back toward it.

The only authorized EcoWater dealer in Cape Breton

That heading is the literal arrangement, not a slogan. EcoWater Nova Scotia is the only authorized EcoWater dealer in Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, so a genuine EcoWater system anywhere on the island comes through us, and so do factory parts and trained service for a system you already own.

Owner Gary Slater has run the company since 2000. From our shop in Waverley we cover the whole province, and Cape Breton is firmly on the route. We schedule island visits for testing, installation, and service, from the Antigonish approach to the causeway, through Port Hawkesbury and Baddeck, to Sydney and the surrounding towns.

Island water

Cape Breton homes draw from private wells and municipal supplies, and we treat both. Island wells sit in the same bedrock as the rest of the province, and that matters more than most homeowners realize: arsenic and uranium occur naturally in Nova Scotia bedrock and dissolve into well water with no taste, smell, or colour. A lab test is the only way to find them. We have successfully treated arsenic at levels as high as 1390 µg/L.

Wells also bring the visible complaints: iron and manganese staining, the rotten-egg smell of sulphur, and hard-water scale. Our air-oxidation filters clear iron, manganese, and sulphur with no salt or chemicals. On municipal supplies, the usual gripe is chlorine taste, which reverse osmosis or carbon filtration takes care of.

Whatever the symptom, testing comes first, so you only ever buy what your water actually needs.

What a test looks at

  • In-house: iron, pH, manganese, total dissolved solids (TDS), and tannins
  • Lab-referred: arsenic, uranium, and bacteria such as E. coli and coliform
  • Nova Scotia Environment recommends testing wells for bacteria about twice a year and water chemistry every couple of years

What we do

The same four jobs we do everywhere in Nova Scotia, scheduled for the island and done at your door.

  • Water testing

Every job starts here. We test in-house for iron, pH, manganese, TDS, and tannins, and refer arsenic, uranium, and bacteria samples to a certified lab, so recommendations follow results, not guesswork.

    How testing works
  • Residential systems

Softeners for hard water, reverse osmosis for drinking water, UV for bacteria, and targeted filters for iron, sulphur, and low pH, sized to your home and your actual water chemistry.

    Explore home systems
  • Commercial systems

Commercial softeners and reverse osmosis for restaurants, hotels, care homes, and schools. Our commercial work includes the Cabot Links Golf Course on the island’s west coast.

    Commercial water treatment
  • Service & maintenance

We keep systems running for years, ours and nearly every other brand. Kenmore, Whirlpool, GE, North Star, and Eco Pure are all built by EcoWater, so we carry the parts and the know-how.

Cape Breton questions

Do you really come to Cape Breton?

Yes. We serve the whole island from our Waverley shop: Sydney, Glace Bay, North Sydney, Baddeck, Port Hawkesbury, and the communities between. We schedule Cape Breton visits so trips line up sensibly, and we come to you for testing, installation, and service. Call us and we’ll set a time that works.

Is Cape Breton well water different from mainland well water?

Not fundamentally. The island shares Nova Scotia’s bedrock geology, so naturally occurring arsenic and uranium can turn up in island wells just as they do on the mainland, alongside iron, manganese, sulphur, and hardness. The mix varies well to well, even between neighbours, which is why we test before we recommend anything.

How often should I test a well on the island?

Nova Scotia Environment recommends testing well water for bacteria about twice a year and its chemistry every couple of years. If it has been longer than that, or your well has never had a lab check for arsenic and uranium, a test is the right place to start.

What Our Customers Say

  • “We just built a new home and our water tested very high in iron and manganese. Gary promptly reviewed our results, retested to confirm the right fix, and sent his friendly, knowledgeable team to install a natural air-oxidation filter. Within minutes we could see the difference. He even checked in over the following days.”

    Justin Hall · Google review

  • “Gary installed our original whole-house water treatment system 14 years ago and it worked exactly as designed, confirmed by regular hospital water tests. … Gary, Rick, Kyle and Cody went above and beyond. They left us with softer, clean, clear water at high pressure, just like the day we moved in.”

    Brad Spencer · Google review

  • “Gary helped me find a solution within my budget and worked out a payment plan. Cody and the team installed a water softener and reverse osmosis. Polite, professional, and they explained everything. The job took under 2.5 hours and they left no mess at all.”
